After graduating from the University of Veterinary Medicine in Utrecht in The Netherlands in 1979, Dr. Frits Verzijlenberg was employed at the university’s department for large animal surgery for 5 years. During those five years, he specialized in large animal anaesthetics, and large animal surgery including abdominal (colic) surgery and lameness examination in horses. Subsequently, he joined a small animal specialists' hospital and gained valuable knowledge and experience in small animal general and orthopedic surgery. He later started his own mixed animal practice which grew to a three-veterinarian practice over the next ten years. In 1995, the Verzijlenberg family emigrated to Canada; and the following year, Dr. Frits started his own mixed animal clinic in Powassan. In 2008, he relocated the clinic to a temporary building in Sundridge while building a new, state-of-the-art hospital on the same property. In September of 2011, the new hospital was officially opened; and in 2012, it gained AAHA status. Dr. Frits has a special interest in surgery and dentistry. Dr. Frits Verzijlenberg is a member of the CVO, OVMA, AAHA, IVAPM, VECCS and AAFP, and holds a Fear Free Pet certification.
